Sushi Makoto - Omakase
About This Spot
Stepping into Sushi Makoto is like entering a quietly curated world nestled just off the Union Square hum. The space carries an intimate, almost meditative calm that invites you to slow down and savor each moment. Soft lighting, the gentle murmur of focused conversation, and the light aroma of fresh seafood blend with the subtle sounds of knives shaping fish and delicate pours from the sake bottles, crafting a serene yet attentive vibe.
The pace here is unhurried but purposeful, a place where every bite is given its due space in time. Sitting at the sushi counter, you become part of a quiet dialogue between chef and diner—a thoughtful exchange that reveals the care embedded in every course. The craftsmanship shines through in the way textures and flavors unfold, from the richness of buttery otoro to the clean, expressive finish of fresh wasabi grated by hand. This isn't just a meal; it's a gentle journey through the rhythm of the sea and the seasons.
Accompanying the courses, thoughtfully composed sake mocktails and a modest selection of wine quietly punctuate the experience without ever stealing the spotlight. The atmosphere feels personal and contained, where each guest finds a moment of calm renewal in the deliberate simplicity of expertly prepared sushi and subtle Japanese touches. It’s a space that balances quiet indulgence with a comforting sense of connection—whether you're out for a meaningful lunch or an evening that lingers just right.

Very good Omakase at NYC. We order the 18-course and add a lot for our dinner. The fish is flown in from Japan. It was very fresh and expertly prepared. chef will talk with u through the whole meal and had incredible attention to detail. There will have a book for the fish texture and flavor. Have good service at all.

Sushi Makoto delivers one of the best omakase experiences in NYC!! The fish was incredibly fresh, and I loved how each piece was paired with just the right sauce or seasoning to bring out its flavor — nothing overpowering, just perfectly balanced. Highlights for me were the fatty tuna, Hokkaido scallop, and the otoro handroll, but honestly every course was on point. The vibe is intimate and relaxed, with attentive service that makes the whole experience feel special without being pretentious. If you’re looking for an omakase with top-quality fish, thoughtful flavor pairings, and a smooth flow from start to finish, this spot is a must-try!!

Surprise to find this omakase in union square, they have cod milt tempura seasonally, it’s so flavorful and rich. The fish choices are great, fresh, incomparable with the $100ish omakase in the city, fish choices are similar to the $300 omakase. Price is great and tasty!

Rainy day kind of happiness Had an 18-course omakase lunch with my husband today — and honestly, it was such a vibe. Quiet space, soft rain outside, and bite after bite of perfectly fresh sushi. Japanese rice just hits different… but my top picks? Fatty tuna, aori ika, and kamasu — absolutely divine. Such a calm, healing little lunch date.

An excellent 18 piece omakase at $160. Priced somewhere in the middle between the $85 strict one-hour joints, and the fancy $350-500 high end places. Decent value for money. Included some dishes from the kitchen (i.e. not only sushi) and a yummy dessert.

Traditional Omikase (chef's choice) Sushi experience with some of the best food we've had in NYC. We had the 15-course meals with a couple add-ons at the end of our dinner. The fish is flown in from Japan. It was very fresh and expertly prepared. Our chef led us through the whole meal and had incredible attention to detail. He quickly noticed that I'm left-handed and presented the pieces of sushi opposite of how it would be placed for a right-handed person. We were blown away with the service and quality of the meal.
